Video shows Thruway tornado | Weather
This video of the storm that blew through the Capital Region late this afternoon was shot by Lindsay Pillips of the Albany Weather Examiner and was posted on our Facebook page at Facebook.com/NewsChannel13. Meteorologist Tim Drawbridge tells us the National Weather Service now confirms that toward the end of the video -- shot from the Thruway rest stop near Amsterdam -- it shows a tornado crossing Interstate 90.
There are also reports of twisted trees down in that area.
Gov. Cuomo issued the following statement on the tornado:
"It appears a tornado touched down in the Amsterdam area Sunday evening. At this time, there have been no reports of any serious injuries, but there are reports of damage to numerous structures. I have dispatched the State Police as well as state urban search and rescue personnel, who were in the area for Hurricane Irene assignments, to lead the state's response and to assess the damage. Power crews are also on the scene to restore electricity to any customers who may have been affected."
